I have tried to copy/paste the binary into the Java Applet, but the code is not being inserted. Typing in text by hand on the other hand works. Does that happen on purpose?

Copy and paste into applet might work depending on policies and java version.
Best is to download the .jar and execute locally, then it should work fine to ctrl+c and ctrl+v stuff.
It will also allow you to load and save files then, and you can modify and inspect the source as well.
Keep in mind that this is a theoretical security issue, as the program can access your filesystem then
