Yes, but by appearence of the first letter.

So the jump from 'r' to 'f' means that the letters do not have to touch the next letter, only that the next letter touch one of the letters prior to it, right? For example, could 'barfoo' be written this way?

No, in the example foo and bar are two separate words.
